Library Science Course and ICT
Topic: ICT in Library Science

The Library & Information Science Course running by most of the universities in India have been incorporated ICT in its syllabus. They basically teach fundamentals of computers, networking, database, selected Library Management software, selected database software, selected programming languages and Internet and it’s various applications and services. Now –a –days it is given high emphasis on Open Source Software

It is also observed that depends on the quality and skill of the teachers of the concerned department restructures their course curricula. Many of them are more interested to teach the latest techniques, software etc. apart from the all the existing one. Most of the time the quality, capability and power of acceptability of the students have been overlooked.

Generally we find that students join BLISc or integrated MLISc course have no computer background. We expect from them that within tenure students will be IT specialist. He will know basic of computer hardware, software, bit-byte techniques, languages and its variations as well as Internet expert, database design expert, web designer as well as content manager. Simultaneously he will learn from CDS/ISIS to DSpace and from GreenStone to Koha- Web2 –Library2 etc…

Other subject demands all these students must be Management Specialist. Or best Classifier, Cataloguer or should good knowledge about Library Act to RTI Act,  Information society to Knowledge society…

How much pressure we impose to our Students? Our course designers ever thought about this mater? After doing all these things shall we give any guarantee to our students that immediately after getting certificate they will get a suitable job??

Let make a boundary for these course and anything extra should incorporated in their MPhil or PhD program where we should eliminate most of the fundamentals from every subjects/paper.  Innocent
